Bio - Andrew Farrell

Andrew Farrell showed spirit and courage throughout his entire young life and defined the true meaning of teammate. Andrew was a member of the Washington Baseball team during the undefeated regular season in 2001. He was a teammate who would always have one-line funny comments to keep the team spirit alive during tough games. In April 2001, a Daily News article about one Washington game described Andrew as " a Babe Ruth- sized designated hitter".

Andrew's family history would make many of us feel sorry for him, but his spirit and courage would remind us all that everything happens for a reason. His family has had a horrible history of cancer. Andrew's older brother, Tommy, had a brain tumor in 1996, leaving him blind in one eye. In 1999, Andrew's little brother, Michael, died of brain cancer. In September 2003, Andrew lost another family member, his beloved mother, of pancreatic and cervical cancer. Many difficult obstacles seemed to keep coming for Andrew but no matter what the circumstance, he continued on with a smile on his face. You would never hear him complain about his hardships. Andrew steered clear of the disease through most of his family's trials and tribulations. His spirit and courage would be challenged in June 2003. Andrews's life changed forever when he was diagnosed with leukemia. The doctors gave him a 20% chance to live.

Andrew never cared if he got credit, he just wanted his goal to be accomplished, and that was to be the best teammate he could. Unfortunately, on April 18, 2004 Andrew Farrell passed away at the age of 21 from a long hard battle with leukemia. There is a quote by Babe Ruth that reminds us all how Andrew's spirit and courage helped his teammates become a family and a winning team:

"The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime.
