The Scholarship
Established in 2004, the Andrew Farrell Spirit of Courage Fund began helping high school students at George Washington High School even before it hosted its first event. But with hopes that the Fund would grow, the organization hosted its first annual homerun derby in 2005. The one-of-a-kind event has since attracted the attention of many students at the school, along with friends and family of the baseball team, and raised the funds necessary to sustain the Fund and offer a $1,000 scholarship each year.
Later, the Fund turned its attention towards hosting an annual golf outing in 2006, and for the first time in 2007, the Fund hosted both events in the same year, enabling the Fund to raise its annual gift to $2,000 plus an additional grant to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).
The scholarship is awarded to a current member of the George Washington High School baseball team who exemplifies Andrew’s zest for life and success on the baseball field by demonstrating leadership skills, determination and courage while playing for the team. At the end of the season the executive board selects a worthy senior member of the team to receive the scholarship, which is awarded annually at the homerun derby.
Your contributions help the Fund to be able to award the annual scholarship and other major gifts donated by the organization. The executive board is always looking for new ways to reward members of the team and this season donated the warm-up uniforms that the team wore prior to all games.
