Nick Romaninsky

Nick Romaninsky is a 2 year varsity player for the George Washington Eagles. Pressure was thrown on Nick’s shoulders coming into the 2009 season. He was given the job of replacing a 1st team all public player from the previous season. As the season went on, Nick stepped up both offensively and defensively when his team needed him the most. He turned in key hits in 2 huge wins for the Eagles, one against Frankford and the other versus Central.

Stan Borodyansky

Stan Borodyansky, co-captain of the 2008 George Washington Eagles, defined in many ways what the Andrew Farrell Spirit of Courage Award is all about. Before becoming a three year Varsity player, Borodyansky had been in a major accident involving him on a bicycle and a motor vehicle. After going through surgery, he went on to recover quicker than what the surgeon had diagnosed. During the 2006 season, as a sophomore, he filled one of the most important positions on the field for the Eagles. He became the starting catcher to replace an injured teammate.

What did winning the Spirit of Courage Fund scholarship mean to you? "Winning the Andrew Farrell Award meant the world to me. It helps me realize that anything is possible no matter who you are or what you do, whether you’re a home-run hitter batting cleanup or you’re just a back-up utility player who comes in when they are needed just to deliver a clutch hit to keep the game alive. You got to believe and never give up. Andrew never did. I've never met him but from what I've heard I think we would have been good friends."

What did winning the Spirit of Courage Fund scholarship mean to you? "Winning the Andrew Farrell Award was one of the most memorable things that happened to me during my high school years. I honestly thought I had no chance at winning this award and the fact that I did win it taught me that you can accomplish anything simply by striding for the best and not giving up."

What did winning the Spirit of Courage Fund scholarship mean to you? "Winning the Andrew Farrell Award meant a lot to me. Though I never met Andrew, I heard so much about him. Throughout my junior year, Coach Welte would come to practice and give us updates on how Andrew was doing, and all Andrew wanted to know about was how the baseball team at Washington was doing. He could be thinking about so many other things at that time but the fact that he was thinking about us really meant a lot. Andrew has touched so many lives with his lovable personality and team spirit. He touched everyone around him and receiving an award like this really makes you appreciate everything that Andrew did as a person and as a teammate, and it’s something I will always carry with me."

What did winning the Spirit of Courage Fund scholarship mean to you? "Winning the Andrew Farrell Spirit of Courage Award really meant the world to me. To know how much my teammates appreciated me was the most rewarding feeling I can imagine. When it came to performance, I was never the best player but to know how much I meant to the team really touched my heart. That same year, I was nominated by my teammates for "Teammate of the Year" on Ted Silary's website and the feeling I got from reading the nominations was better than winning any championship."
